Everyone knows podcasts. But what about video podcasts? The so-called vodcasts are a niche, but are becoming more and more popular. Therefore, there is still a chance to stand out from the crowd with a video podcast.
We have already presented the trend of video podcasts in more detail in two blog articles: The Types of a Video Podcast and The Benefits of a Video Podcast. So if you’ve never heard of the new format, you should definitely read those two posts now.
What do I need for a video podcast?
And for those who want to start a video podcast themselves, we have a list of the most important equipment. Because without the right equipment, a recording can quickly turn into a disaster. To make sure the quality is right, we’ve put some thought into it.
4K resolution for a sharp camera image
The first and most important point for recording a vodcast is, of course, the camera. For a video podcast, you absolutely need at least one camera. If, for example, an interview is to be filmed from several perspectives, several cameras are necessary. Regarding the technical requirements for the camera, we advise a 4K camera. This way, the image will be razor-sharp. In any case, the camera should have a resolution of 1080p, i.e. Full HD. If you only want a remote interview, you can also use a solid webcam.
Tripod for high stability
A tripod also belongs to the camera. This is the only way to film the interview guests from the right angle. So-called tripods are recommended here. Tripods are characterized by their high stability and can be used at any location.
Putting yourself in the right light – the right lighting
Quick, and above all inexpensive, improvements can be made with the right lighting. If you invest in ring lights, studio lights and spotlights here, you can have your video podcast on a different level. After all, who doesn’t want to be presented in the best light 😉.
External microphone for the perfect sound
As with a “normal” podcast, suitable microphones are part of the standard equipment of a video podcast. And this is an area where you should never skimp. Because if the viewers don’t understand the host properly, if there is noise and crackling, they will probably not watch another episode. That’s why it’s important to use an external microphone that can be placed a few centimeters in front of the mouth.
The right software for post-production
Finally, the right software for a video podcast is of course necessary. With an audio editor, background noise, filler words and other disturbing factors can be removed during the recording. There are many free as well as paid providers. We have had good experiences with the free program “Audacity”. In addition, video editing software is required for a video podcast. With it, images and texts can be adjusted, colors can be optimized and scenes can be cut out. The most popular programs are Adobe Premiere, Final Cut or DaVinci Resolve.
